Remember when someone in your life, like a parent or grandparent, told you stories about their life? Remember how their eyes lit up when they told you about a time they were younger, the things that they did and places they had seen? Maybe you are now that person, telling your stories to your children or grandchildren. You really should be, it is very important to them.
Since the beginning of human existence stories have been passed down from generation to generation. Embellished or not, it is how valuable lessons are learned and wonderful adventures entertain and inspire. Some people learn from mistakes and others take a few lessons before they figure things out, but everyone experiences a unique and colorful life. The story of your life is more important than you might know and there are no two lives exactly the same. Many people don’t think that their life was all that interesting, but that’s because they were there, they lived it. To other people, that person’s life was very interesting.
I remember my father telling me about when he first came to Canada in the 1950’s and he worked for the railroad. At times It was very cold and he recalls being bundled up with only his eyes and the tip of his nose exposed to the elements. Outside, in the middle of nowhere, he cleared snow off the track switches so that trains could operate safely. To him it was just a really crappy job that he had when he first came to the country and didn’t yet speak English. To me it was a fascinating story that gave me a new perspective as to who my dad was and what life was like for him back then. When you look back through time, it is hard to imagine how the world was for previous generations. To experience it through the words of someone who was there and lived that life is priceless. We owe it to the future to tell our stories.
Imagine if the history of every person on earth was recorded, there would be an endless library of incredible stories. Family members would live on in the hearts and minds of future generations. Newcomers to the world could read about the lives and history of their ancestors, where they came from and how they lived their lives. Mankind would have a real understanding of how things like technology, politics and war have influenced our lives, from a real human perspective rather than just through the news and media reports.
Whether you think so or not, you have lead a fascinating life. Make your contribution to human history and record your life story.
